Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya born on September 15, 1860 in Muddenahalli village of Karnataka. He is commonly known as Sir MV. He was an Indian eminent civil engineer and statesman and the “Diwan of Maysor”, serving from 1912 to 1919.

Contribution towards country:

His contribution towards India’s progress “most prolific civil engineer, dam builder, economist, statesman, and can be counted among the last century’s foremost nation builder”. Also important contribution is the construction of the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam in Mysore as well as a flood protection system for the city of Hyderabad. He is also attributed with inventing the Block System means “automated doors that close in the condition of overflow”. He also implemented an intricate system of irrigation in the Decan Plateau, and designed and patented a system of automatic weir water flood gates that were installed in 1903 at Khadkvasla Reservoir, Pune.

Since time immemorial, engineer have put their efforts in “transforming the theoretical to the practical for the betterment of all.” The term engineering is derived from the Latin igeniare, meaning “to contrive, devise.” The engineers have creativity, capabilities and lots of knowledge and they don’t sit back and relax until and unless they have found solution to the problems.

Due to his outstanding contribution towards the country, Government of India conferred “Bharat Ratna” in the year 1955. He was also awarded the British Knighthood by King George V, and hence has the honorific’ sir’.”
